Physics and AI impact project pathfinder
Physics has been an early-adopter, heavy user of and contributor to the field of AI. We are working with the community to identify the unique challenges and opportunities for AI to further benefit physics research and for physics to contribute to the development of AI technologies.
About the impact project pathfinder
IOP is shaping the debate on the most important physics topics to the science and innovation community in the UK and Ireland, in order to influence and drive impact. As part of developing our ongoing programme of high-impact projects informed by community priorities, the Business Innovation & Growth (BIG) Group submitted a proposal for the IOP to carry out an impact project on physics and AI. The aim of this impact pathfinder project is to work with the community to better identify the challenges and opportunities for an impact project, as well as identify stakeholders for engagement and influencing.
We ran a survey September - October 2024 and 700 people responded. The survey looked at the level of experience with AI and views on AI.

We also held a one-day landscaping workshop in November 2024 with around 40 physicists from academia and industry to identify challenges and opportunities in physics and AI. The outcome of the workshop will be summarised in a white paper to be published in quarter one of 2025.
