Vacuum Physics Group Thesis Prize

The first edition of the prize that recognises the year’s most outstanding PhD thesis in the field of vacuum physics.

This prize from the Vacuum Physics Group is for the year’s most outstanding PhD thesis in the field of vacuum physics. This is the first time the prize has been made so the qualification period has been extended.

Qualifying research includes, but is not limited to, fundamental work in vacuum and/or the novel use of vacuum techniques and/or applications of vacuum.

The competition is open to all IOP members; but is not open to paid employees of the IOP, members of its Council or officers and members of special interest group committees.

The prize is made up of £250 and a certificate. The winning entry will be published on these webpages, on our social media and in our newsletter.

Submissions should include:

  • a one- to two-page extended abstract on a completed (and examined) PhD thesis (examination in the period October 2020 to October 2023) that explains the outstanding nature of the work;
  • a list of the candidate’s publications;
  • the candidate’s IOP membership number; and
  • the candidate’s contact details and their supervisor’s contact details.

Entries will be judged by a panel comprising officers and ordinary members of the Vacuum Physics Group committee.

We are no longer accepting entries for 2024. Please send any enquiries to the group Secretary, Dr Richard Moseley, [email protected].
