IOP Magnetism Group Early Career Award

The prize is awarded to an early career member for outstanding contributions to magnetism or a related field.

Terms of reference

The prize is awarded to an early career member for outstanding contributions to magnetism or a related field. Outstanding contributions in this context could include, for example, the generation of new ideas, tools, methodologies, or knowledge in their field of research; contributions to the wider research and innovation community; contributions to broader audiences and towards wider societal benefit.

A certificate will be awarded and the recipient of this prize will be invited talk at the Magnetism 2025 conference 7-8 April 2025 at The Cutler's Hall, Sheffield, UK.

The prize is jointly supported by the IOP Magnetism Group and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) UK and Ireland Magnetics Chapter.

Eligibility

Eligible nominees are early career members working in the field of magnetism or a related area in any institution in the UK or Ireland. ‘Early career’ in this context would ordinarily apply to individuals who do not hold a permanent academic position, or equivalent for non-academic institutions, and those who have not led an independent research team at the time of application. Those who are currently paid employees of the IOP, members of Council, members of the awarding group’s committee, and those under contract to the IOP are not eligible for awards.

Nomination process

Nominations can be made by the nominee, a supervisor or line manager, or any member of the IOP Magnetism Group.

Nominations for this award are now closed.

Selection process

The prize is chosen in alternate years by the IOP Magnetism Group and the IEEE UK and Ireland Magnetics Chapter. A panel formed from members of the relevant committee will review all nominated applications. The panel will base their evaluation primarily on the overall quality of relevant contributions made by nominees and not simply on quantitative metrics.

We encourage and welcome nominations from people from underrepresented backgrounds and those who may not have previously applied or nominated others for an award. Nomination will be decided by discussion between, or ballot of, panel members and committee chairs.

GDPR compliance

The IOP Magnetism Group and IEEE UK and Ireland Magnetics Chapter committee will be reviewing all submitted applications. The data submitted will be used solely to determine the awardees of the above prize. The nomination forms will be retained for up to one year, after which point, any personal data will be deleted.
