International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

The United Nations has proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ).

This is a worldwide initiative to raise public awareness of the importance of quantum science and applications. It celebrates 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics.

The IYQ runs throughout 2025, launching in February at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

International Year of Quantum

The Institute of Physics will mark the year across the UK and Ireland. Our aim is to celebrate the milestone for the community, excite more people from a range of backgrounds to join us, and maintain political momentum.

The IOP will:

Develop a calendar..

...that aggregates upcoming UK and Ireland-wide quantum events on the IOP's events page - and feed these events into the international calendar.

Engage and foster relationships with stakeholders...

...to ensure joined up awareness of relevant events and encourage participation in confirmed events.

IOP’s communications and marketing team will facilitate development of a set of core messages...

...to raise public awareness of the urgent opportunity quantum represents.

Represent the UK on the IYQ International Steering Group and sub-committees...

...(opening and closing ceremony, fundraising, marketing and comms, global events).
