Reciprocal agreements and tax relief
Reciprocal agreements
Members of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), the Nuclear Institute (NI), the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) and the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) may apply to the IOP to reduce their membership subscription rate by 25%. Current ASE members will be offered a 30% discount on the full annual subscription rate of each membership category.
Applicants may claim only one discount or concession at a time. Please indicate ASE, BIR, IPEM, NI, RAS or RMetS and institution membership number with your annual fee payment and when applying to join the IOP.
Please note, only one discount, the one that leads to the greatest reduction (either the reciprocal agreement or the member concessionary rate), will be applied.
Tax relief for member fee subscriptions
As an IOP member you may be eligible to claim back tax relief on your annual subscription fee if being a member is a requirement to do your job or is relevant to your job. However, you must have paid the subscription fee yourself and not have been reimbursed by your employer. There are a number of requirements to be able to claim back this tax relief.
Each individual member should assess their own situation and decide for themselves whether they meet the criteria for claiming back this tax relief.
Key criteria:
- Professional bodies approved tax relief list
Members should always check the most up to date list of approved professional bodies to ensure that the IOP remains on this list. - Claim tax relief individual check
Members should always complete the above questionnaire to ensure that they meet the requirements to claim tax relief. If you are eligible to claim the tax relief following completion of this questionnaire, you will be prompted to claim your expenses through HMRC’s website.
