National Physical Laboratory Rayleigh Award Celebration

Following the success of our 2024 event, the LSE branch and NPL once more collaborate to showcase the excellence and diversity of NPL science and engineering with talks from the 2024 Rayleigh Award winners; NPL’s prestigious scientific prize.

Best Paper: Jonathan Fletcher (Speaker), Patrick See & Masaya Kataoka
Title: Time resolved Coulomb collision of single electrons, Nature Nanotechnology (2023)

We describe an experiment based on a miniature “single electron collider”. The result was unexpected: the two electrons do not even collide but changed their trajectory to avoid each other. This coulomb-dominated regime has never been seen previously and is intimately related to primary electrical metrology.

Early Career Author: Yunlong Zhao (ECS)
Title: Rectifying interphases for preventing Li dendrite propagation in solid-state electrolytes, Energy and Environmental Science (2023)

Solid-state batteries are a ground-breaking advancement in energy storage technology. This work is the first to use semiconductor processing technology to control the flux of both electrons and ions in the battery, breaking the chain of battery short-circuit conditions based on the fundamentals of electrochemistry.

Part of the IOP London and South East (LSE) region Physics Talk Series.

Tea/coffee served from 18:00 - 18:30.

Lecture starts: 18:30 for approx. 25 minutes each (with 10mins for questions).

The lecture is free and open to all but registration is required. Please register via the 'Book Now' button.
