Meteors, Meteorites and Asteroid Missions

Meteor - BNSS Talk

Speaker: Dr Áine O’Brien, University of Glasgow

What’s the difference between a meteor, meteorite, a fireball and an asteroid? What’s the chance we might get hit by an asteroid? How do we know? How are we trying to stop this if it ever does happen? Aside from avoiding dinosaur-like extinction, what’s the point in studying space rocks? What happens when a meteorite lands?

Áine will have a go at answering these questions, and any others you might have on meteoritics and planetary science and tell you about the discovery of the first UK meteorite in 30 years on a driveway two years ago!

There is no requirement to pre-register for this event. It is requested that if you feel unwell or have symptoms of COVID, you do not attend. Mask wearing is encouraged but not mandatory. Doors will be open from 6.30pm and refreshments will be available. The talk begins at 7pm.
