Listening for nuclear tests: what can seismology tell us?

Speaker: Dr David Green, CPhys, FInstP, AWE
How are seismic waves generated by underground nuclear tests? How do these waves propagate through Earth, and how do we detect such wave motion thousands of kilometres from an explosion site? Can we distinguish explosions from other seismic signals? These are questions relevant to forensic seismologists and in this talk we will consider the techniques that have helped improve confidence in our ability to identify underground explosions across the world..We will discover how such techniques have also been used to better understand other sources of seismic activity from submarine disasters, underwater gas explosions, and accidental industrial detonations.
