Aurora

Speaker: Professor Mike Lockwood

Prof. Mike Lockwood is Professor of Space Environment Physics in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading and is currently President of the Royal Astronomical Society.

He has wide-ranging interests in solar-terrestrial physics from the solar corona to the upper atmosphere, and on solar influences on global and regional climate. He is currently involved in constructing a space weather climatology that extends back over the past 400 years, using both models and analysis of space-age data.

In his talk Prof Lockwood will describe the physical processes connecting the solar wind to the aurora and the causes of extreme events, such as the G5 "Extreme" geomagnetic storm and the associated 'great' auroral displays of May 2024.
