The IOP is a charity, and gifts to it help physics and the physics community deliver on their potential for our lives, our society, and our planet. Under our Physics for our future strategy, we are aiming to:
- tackle the physics skills shortage and open up opportunity;
- strengthen physics across science, research, innovation and technology; and
- explore the social and economic benefits of physics and ensuring they are understood.
Leaving a legacy gift case study: Edward Steers
We remember Professor Steers’s life and look at how his legacy gift has allowed the IOP to lay the foundations for a diverse physics talent pipeline.

Our vision is to improve the lives of those who research, teach, study, apply and love physics, attract more people into the wonder and opportunities of physics, and realise physics’s full potential to build a brighter, healthier, more prosperous and sustainable society for us all.
The IOP also owns and is financially supported by IOP Publishing (IOPP), a non-profit academic publisher whose only shareholder is science. Find out more about IOPP and how it puts purpose above profit.
Who can give and ways to give
As a donor to the IOP, your support will go beyond a simple financial contribution. You will witness first-hand the impact your donation is having with invitations to exclusive events.
You will meet the beneficiaries of your generosity – from young children with a new-found love for and curiosity in physics, to researchers working on the breakthroughs our world needs.
After taking care of your loved ones, you can leave another lasting legacy at the IOP. A gift in your will is a tax-efficient way to help future generations experience the immense opportunities physics will hold for them personally and for society. This gift could be a share of your estate (residuary gift) or a set amount of cash (pecuniary gift).
If you choose or have already chosen to leave a gift to us, please let us know the details of your pledge: this helps us plan for the future. You can find contact details at the bottom of this page.
The IOP partners with trusts and foundations to create lasting impact across skills, science and society.
Their support has enabled us to promote physics to underserved communities and work more closely with young people, parents/carers, teachers and schools. We would be happy to have a conversation if you believe that your organisation’s strategy aligns with ours.
We are thankful to the following trusts and foundations for their generous support of the IOP’s mission:
- Education Endowment Foundation
- The Wolfson Foundation
- Garfield Weston Foundation
- The Waterloo Foundation
- John Lyon’s Charity
- The Drayson Foundation
- Gatsby Charitable Foundation
- The Ogden Trust
Physics-powered businesses support millions of livelihoods, accounting for more than 10% of GDP and employment in the UK and 9% in Ireland. We help these businesses be more inclusive, more resilient and more vibrant than ever.
We advocate fearlessly for them with government and other stakeholders; we help them harness the benefits of diverse teams for innovation and productivity.
Physics-based skills play an even broader role in our economies. Today, those skills underpin jobs and industries in every region of the UK and Ireland, at all levels. We work tirelessly to develop the future talent pipeline.

The Institute of Physics Benevolent Fund is an independent charity whose trustees are IOP or Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) members. It provides assistance to:
- members of the IOP and/or IPEM and their dependants; and
- in certain cases, individuals who are eligible for membership of either the IOP or IPEM but are unable to afford to take out membership at the time of application.
The Benevolent Fund has provided help for members facing a critical need that they cannot otherwise meet – whether due to unemployment, sickness, unexpected financial hardship or unforeseen career breaks.
Please use the contact details at the bottom of this page if you wish to support the fund.
