Support and grants

An innovative fund instigated by leading physicist Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and the Institute of Physics to encourage greater diversity in physics by assisting PhD physics students from under-represented groups.

Support for members, or their dependants, during unemployment, ill-health or a career break.

Up to £250 for members who could not otherwise go to an event or conference because they are a parent or carer.

This grant supports physics-based projects in the UK and Ireland that align with the Limit Less campaign and improve people’s relationship with physics in their family or community groups. Applications have closed for 2024.

As an IOP Teacher Training Scholar, you’ll receive tax-free funding and be part of a like-minded community with access to masterclasses, physics teacher training workshops and support.

For members in the early stages of their career to attend an overseas conference. 

For researchers at the start of their careers to attend international meetings and facilities. 

Grants of up to £500 for overseas members to run events with national physics societies in their countries of residence. 

Financial support for PhD research students to attend international and major national meetings.

Support for physics outreach exclusively in Scotland, to reach new audiences and inspire Scotland’s future physicists. 

IOP Ireland awards funding from €100-1,000 to support outreach activities and initiatives in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
