Young scientists: we want you for the IOP’s Eurekas competition
29 May 2024
This year’s theme is ‘Unravelling Mysteries’.
Young scientists are being sought by the Institute of Physics (IOP) to enter a coveted national science competition and share their passion for physics with the world.
The IOP’s Eurekas competition, part of the Limit Less campaign, is now in its third year and invites young people from the UK and Ireland to explore the intersection of physics and their passions.
Entries can be in a wide range of forms, so whether a budding Einstein or Marie Curie, and arty, sporty, musical or into literature and language, science or humanities, you can show how physics can help unlock the mysteries in our lives.
Any student aged 11-16 can take part and all entries that meet the criteria will be accepted. An inspiring judging panel will determine which entries demonstrate exceptional originality and creativity, with a number of prizes up for grabs for students and their schools.
Sarah Bakewell, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the IOP, said: “The Eurekas isn’t just a competition; it’s a celebration of young innovators and their talents. It’s also an opportunity for them to showcase their passions to a national audience.
“This year’s topic for the competition is ‘Unravelling Mysteries’ so should give a wide scope for young people and their teachers to have enormous fun thinking about how physics helps us solve the puzzles of our world.
“So whether you fancy cracking the mysteries of the universe, understanding how the perfect free-kick finds its way into the net, exploring the inner workings of a power station, or showcasing that jet packs are going to catch on – have a go!
“In short, if it baffles and fascinates you and physics can help find the answer, then we are interested!”
Last year, The Eurekas received 203 entries from nearly 300 students from more than 60 schools across the UK and Ireland, with enthusiastic support from teachers, parents and caregivers. They were in a wide range of formats, from film and music to presentations.
Entrants were challenged to explore how physics powers their passions, resulting in a diverse array of submissions that showcased creativity and ingenuity. Each entry offered a unique perspective on the limitless possibilities of physics in everyday life.
Winning projects such as ‘Newton’s Formula 1’ and ‘Flying with Newton’s Laws’ exemplified the innovative spirit of The Eurekas, while highly commended entries such as ‘Cakes Matter!’ and ‘Flip Flops are Awesome’ demonstrated the wide-ranging impact of physics across various interests and hobbies.
These remarkable submissions from previous years serve as inspiration for aspiring participants, highlighting the endless opportunities to explore physics in unexpected ways.
As the deadline approaches, young people are urged to seize this opportunity to take advantage of the wonders of physics in new ways. Are you ready to unlock the secrets of the world’s mysteries? The Eurekas awaits your answer.
