Situation in Ukraine
26 April 2022
An update from the IOP on support for those affected by war and the actions we have taken.
The Institute of Physics condemns without reservation the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s actions are a violation of one of the most fundamental norms of international law that prohibit the use or threat of force by one state against another.
As the UK and Ireland Learned Society and Professional Body for physicists and a global publishing business, we have been reviewing our activities and exploring the practical and financial help we can give those affected by the war.
Support for people affected by the war
The Physics Benevolent Fund will make grants to professional physicists affected by the war in Ukraine, up to a total of £200,000, with half of this sum funded by the IOP and the remainder by the Fund.
To help facilitate communication and engagement, we have given individuals from Ukraine affiliated with Ukrainian institutions free access to all scientific research that we publish. We will also waive Article Processing Charges for corresponding authors based in Ukraine so that they can publish open access for free in any of our journals and are offering submission extensions for any researcher whose ability to work is affected.
Further action
We have ceased all new sales of products and marketing to Russian/Belarusian institutions and have paused the commissioning of new content from Russian/Belarusian institutions and conferences.
We are keeping our relationships with all Russian/Belarusian institutions under review as we monitor the situation closely.
We continue to hope for a swift resolution to the crisis and an end to its devastating impacts on the people of Ukraine.
