IOP at the Primary Science Teacher Awards

24 June 2019

The IOP was proud to endorse two awards as part of the 2018 Primary Science Teacher Awards, which were presented at the Celebration Dinner at Dynamic Earth as part of the Primary Science Education Conference (PSEC 2019).

Around 185 outstanding teachers have been inducted as Fellows of the Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT) College, each identified as not only having a significant effect on the teaching and learning of science within their own schools, but also more widely through clusters of schools and the learning areas in which they work.

Stuart Farmer, IOP’s Scottish Education Manager, presented the awards on IOP’s behalf to the two winners Anita Angier and Robin James.  Anita Angier, of Shapinsay Community School, Orkney, has a passion for bringing relevant, real-life science and STEM opportunities to the children of Shapinsay and it is evident that her own love of the subjects inspires the children and staff on this remote Orkney island. Robin James, of Exeter Road Primary School, Exmouth, runs a PSTT-funded College Project, ‘Looking for Learning’, in which he investigates how teachers can improve learning during hands-on science investigations by filming the children’s experiences. The project has demonstrated that this technique stimulates dialogue in the classroom, and through reflection and peer assessment, encourages children to learn better.

IOP was pleased to be able to support the event, which was a showcase for the very best in primary science teaching and the support available for primary teachers both in the UK and internationally.

Nominations for the 2019 Awards open on 12 July; please visit  the PSTT website to find out more.
