IOP to coordinate International Year of Quantum celebrations

10 December 2024

The UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology celebrates 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics.

We’re delighted to announce that the IOP will be the UK coordinator for the UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

The IYQ runs throughout 2025 and is a worldwide initiative to raise awareness of quantum science and its applications, timed to celebrate 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics.

The Year will launch in February at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and the IOP will be supporting events and awareness-raising activity throughout 2025, including:

  • At QuAMP, the IOP’s biennial international conference on quantum, atomic and molecular physics (2-4 September);
  • At the National Quantum Technologies Showcase (8 November);
  • A packed calendar of quantum-related content from Physics World, with a dedicated quantum newsletter, quizzes, podcast content and more running throughout the year; and
  • A series of international initiatives led by IOP Publishing journals.

The activity will culminate in a three-part IOP celebration in November, with a quantum community event led by our History of Physics and qBIG special interest groups, a schools event at the Royal Institution, and a public celebration with a keynote speech from Professor Jim Al-Khalili.

Special events will be noted on the IOP's International Year of Quantum events page, and if anyone wants to get in touch they can email [email protected]
