IOP congratulates scientists named on King’s 2025 New Year’s Honours List

This year sees physics innovators, educators and leaders honoured.


The Institute of Physics (IOP) has today congratulated the IOP members and scientists honoured in the 2025 King’s New Year’s Honours List.

Included in the list is IOP council member and Fellow Dr Peter Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Physical Laboratory, who received a CBE for services to science and technology.

He is joined by Professor Paul Monks, Director General and Chief Scientific Adviser, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, who has been made a Companion of the Order of the Bath for services to science in government.

And congratulations have also been offered to Richard Livesey, Scientific Adviser at the Ministry of Defence, Professor Douglas Paul, Professor of Semiconductor Devices at the University of Glasgow and Professor Rachel Oliver, Professor of Materials at the University of Cambridge, who all received an OBE.

Also honoured this year are Dr Harry Destecroix, founder of Science Creates, and Professor Martin John Wooster, Professor of Earth Observation Science, King’s College London, who both received MBEs.

And honoured with close links to the world of physics and the IOP is Clare Harvey who has been given an MBE for services to education.
