IOP’s comment on government’s response to Augar review of post-18 education and funding

Disadvantaged students will be hit by loans shake-up, says IOP.
Responding to the Augar review of post-18 education funding in England, published today, IOP Deputy Chief Executive Rachel Youngman said: “The government’s planned changes to student loan provision will hit disadvantaged students the most.
“Government figures suggest that it may deter those who are already thinking twice about higher education because of the cost. This will of course include potential students of physics, which offers a proven path to well-paid, satisfying careers for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Of course, satisfying careers in physics don’t need a degree – what is important is that both further and higher education routes into science careers are properly funded and high-quality.”
