Physics community gathers to celebrate IOP’s new Physics Inclusion Award
12 November 2024
Final roadshow attended by key stakeholders from the STEM sector to learn about successor to respected gender inclusion award Project Juno. First-stage applications for the new Award are now open.
Members of the physics community gathered at Cardiff University on Monday for the IOP’s final Physics Inclusion Award Network meeting and to officially open the first stage in applications for the Award.
The meeting was attended by IOP President Professor Sir Keith Burnett and group CEO Tom Grinyer, the Physics Inclusion Award steering group (including physicists from around the UK and Ireland), as well as representatives from university physics departments and key stakeholders from the wider STEM sector.
The Award supports university schools and departments of physics to be welcoming and inclusive to those from all backgrounds and is the successor to the IOP’s respected gender inclusion award, Project Juno.
Developed by the physics community with the IOP, the Award offers guidance, tools and advice to help departments attract, retain and support the diverse talent and ideas that make physics great – and power a better future for us all.
The event was the final stop on the IOP’s Physics Inclusion Award roadshow around the UK and Ireland. Cardiff University’s School of Physics and Astronomy, which hosted the meeting, was one of the 11 physics departments in the UK and Ireland who participated in the Physics Inclusion Award pilot scheme.
First stage of applications now open
University departments are now invited to submit their Expressions of Interest to [email protected] to apply for the Award, with the first assessment panel taking place in March 2025. Expressions of Interest can be submitted up until 23.59 on Sunday 1 December.
The IOP is also seeking panel members for the inaugural Physics Inclusion Award Assessment Panel and is inviting applications until 23.59 on Sunday 8 December 2024.
