We are delighted to announce our four new trustees, who will take up their posts from 1 October 2024.
The votes for the 2024 IOP Council elections have been counted and verified. We are delighted to announce our four new trustees, who will take up their posts from 1 October 2024. Thanks to all the candidates involved for putting their names forward and congratulations to the successful candidates.
Elected as Vice-President for Business
Professor Robert Lamb
Professor Robert Lamb is the Chief Research and Technology Officer for the Electronics Division at Leonardo and is responsible for emerging technology strategy for future product development.
He led the company’s Applied Research programme for electro-optics focusing on laser systems, computational imaging, machine learning, additive manufacturing and photonics, and he regularly contributes to government strategies for quantum technology and semiconductors.
Robert also maintains strong collaborations with academia to coordinate a balanced company investment in emerging technologies for future electro-optic systems, linking their development to an innovative manufacturing supply chain.
Elected as Vice-President for Learning and Skills
Dr Judith Hillier
Dr Judith Hillier, Associate Professor of Science Education (Physics), University of Oxford, has been at the university’s Department of Education since 2007, where she is Deputy PGCE Course Director and lead PGCE Science Tutor.
Judith’s research interests lie in the education of science teachers, the recruitment and retention of physics teachers, the role of language in the development of scientific explanations in the classroom, and gender and diversity in STEM education.
In 2021 she was awarded the Marie Curie-Sklodowska Medal by the IOP for her significant contribution to the support of women in physics through her work with the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics, and to the education of teachers of physics.
Elected as General Trustees
Rebecca Dewey PhD
Rebecca Dewey is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, working at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre. Rebecca’s research uses MRI to understand how the brain processes sound and what happens when that goes wrong, as well as improving how people with cochlear implants undergo MRI.
In her spare time she volunteers with AuthorAID to address the imbalance of published research findings coming from low-income countries. Rebecca has previously served as Chair of the East Midlands Branch of the IOP.
Paula Knee
Paula Knee is a Partner at Technopolis, an international consultancy specialising in science, technology and innovation policy with a role in economic growth and wellbeing. She has had a wide-ranging career in physics and science policy, starting in applied R&D at a spin-out from a US national laboratory and at the National Physical Laboratory, before moving into science policy in government and consulting.
She has a BSc in physics, an MSc in applied optics from Imperial College London and an MSc in technology and innovation management from the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex.
