Term of office: October 2024-September 2028

Institute of Physics Council General Trustee Dr Rebecca Dewey with a magnetic resonance imaging scanner

Rebecca is a Senior Research Fellow at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre at the University of Nottingham. She completed her PhD at Nottingham in functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 2012 and has worked in the field of auditory neuroscience at the university since then.

Her work spans the fields of brain imaging and hearing research, using MRI to visualise the auditory nerve and investigate the effects of noise exposure on the human hearing system. She works closely with local hospitals, clinical researchers, and medical device manufacturers to improve the processes involved in MRI, scanning individuals who use implanted auditory prostheses such as cochlear implants.

Rebecca joined the East Midlands Branch Committee of the IOP in 2016 and was Chair between 2019 and 2023. During her time on the committee she became actively involved in promoting, updating, and improving the accessibility of the “I am a physicist” Girlguiding badge, including producing a Welsh translation.

Rebecca embodies equality, diversity, and inclusivity in all her activities, championing access to physics resources for British Sign Language users, and helping to run The Gettaway Club, a Nottingham charity for adults with learning disabilities.

She is one of the winners of the 2024 Phillips Award.
