David is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Photonics in the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, University College London (UCL). From 2007-14 he was CEO of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and, from 2014-2017, was Chair of the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Scientific Advisory Council.
He is currently Chair of the Healthcare Topic Group at the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Future Metrology Hub at the University of Huddersfield.
Previously he spent more than 35 years at UCL, where he worked on the development of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and imaging of brain oxygenation. Whilst at UCL, he became Head of the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, and left in 2007, as Vice-Provost for Research.
David is a Fellow of the Royal Society, RAEng and the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS), and is a member of several advisory committees at both those academies and at UK universities.
He is currently a member of the Home Office Science Advisory Council, and has been a Council member at RAEng, AMS and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
David chairs the Finance & Investment Committee and the Remuneration Committee and is a member of the Nominations Committee and Honorary Fellows Committee.
