Honorary Fellows: Professor Sir Andre Geim
University of Manchester
Professor Geim has a remarkable scientific record. A hallmark of his work is exceptional experimental ability in condensed matter physics for which he has produced many key results in mesoscopic superconductivity and “Gecko” tape.
Professor Geim’s educational experiments on diamagnetic levitation have led to results that have inspired the public – “levitating frog” –and opened up a new research area on earth bound low-gravity experiments.
In 2004 his group at the University of Manchester demonstrated graphene – a single atomic layer of carbon –from graphite and then measured the many remarkable physical properties of this material. For the work on graphene, Profs. Geim and Novoselov were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics.
