Honorary Fellows: Professor Cyril Hilsum
For his sustained contributions to the field of functional materials.
By initiating national programmes of research on gallium arsenide in the 1960s liquid crystals in the 1970s and high temperature semiconductors in the 1980s, Prof Hilsum has played a major role in the early development of some of the key technologies which underpin and are likely to underpin our life in the 21st Century.
Prof Hilsum was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1979 and served as President of the Institute of Physics from 1988- 1990.
