Honorary Fellows: Professor Michael Green

Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Cambridge University

For his contributions to theoretical physics, particularly his pioneering work on superstring theory.

Michael Green is one of the world’s leading theoretical physicists whose pioneering work on superstring theory has revolutionised the world of theoretical physics. His work with John Schwarz has achieved world-wide recognition and been awarded many prizes. Together they wrote a very important series of papers that laid the foundations of superstring theory. In particular, their paper discovering anomaly cancellation in superstring theory is one of the most important and influential papers in theoretical physics in the last 30 years, showing for the first time that there is a consistent string theory that is chiral and which has a large gauge group, so that it is a candidate for a theory of everything that incorporates a consistent quantum theory of gravity with a realistic chiral model of matter.
