2023 Phillips Award: Dr Francesca M Doddato

For outstanding contributions and service to promoting equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility within the Institute of Physics and creation of the I&D Advocates Initiative.

Dr Francesca M Doddato has been a passionate, active member of several committees within the Institute of Physics (IOP), promoting diversity and inclusion across the organisation. She first joined her local branch committee (Lancashire and Cumbria) at the end of 2016, and created the first 'diversity representative' branch role. This led to her presenting to other groups and institutions on diversity-related matters. She has also acted as diversity champion on the Membership Committee from 2018 until its dissolution, and played a vital role on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee following invitation by IOP in 2019. In her role on these committees, she leads the Inclusion and Diversity Advocates initiative, which she created following a request from IOP’s Head of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). This initiative was launched in June 2021, aiming to place advocates on all IOP committees and groups to ensure EDI is embedded in all IOP activities. She is also a member of the Limit Less members advisory group.

Alongside her work within IOP, Doddato heavily promotes accessibility in STEMM. In particular she is determined to get disabilities, including neurodivergence, better accepted and included in EDI discussions, as so often this demographic is overlooked and ignored. She is an active member of the National Association of Disabled Staff Network STEMM Action Group, and has contributed to work setting out recommendations for overcoming barriers for disabled researchers. In December 2021, she was commissioned by IOP Publishing to write a book on supporting disabled scientists in universities with a primary focus on physics. She is also co-chair of the Disabled Employees Network (DEN+) for Lancaster University, and its sister network, DEN+ Allies.
