Survey of Academic Appointments in Physics 1999-2004
The Institute of Physics commissioned this study to establish the current state of the academic physics community.
Its objectives were three-fold:
- to determine the current breakdown of the community in terms of gender, grade
and research activity; - to discover the movements into and out of the community over the last 5 years; &
- to develop a set of data which would act as a baseline for future studies.
The results of this study refer to staff in standard academic departments; specialist and cross-disciplinary research units of a quasi-independent nature are not within the scope of this study.
