Dr Frances Saunders, an IOP Honorary Fellow who was our President in 2013–15, has been made a Dame in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to science and engineering.

Also among the honours announced on 9 June was a knighthood for Professor James Hough (pictured left), Associate Director of the Institute for Gravitational Research at the University of Glasgow. Professor Hough, who is an IOP Honorary Fellow and has served as a Trustee of IOP, was made a knight for services to the detection of gravitational waves.

A knighthood has also been awarded to Professor Steven Cowley (below left), an IOP Fellow who is President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, for services to science and the development of nuclear fusion. Professor Cowley was formerly chief executive of the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

A CBE has been awarded to IOP Fellow Professor Graham Hutchings, Regius Professor of Chemistry at Cardiff University and Director of the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, for services to chemistry and innovation. An OBE has been awarded to IOP Fellow Professor Kenneth Grattan, who is George Daniels Professor of Scientific Instrumentation and Dean of the Graduate School at City University of London, for services to science
