IOP welcomes new Higher Education Minister and new Education Secretary

The Institute of Physics today welcomed the appointment of the new Minister for Higher Education and the new Education Secretary as part of a Government reshuffle.

Damian Hinds was yesterday appointed Secretary of State for Education, succeeding Justine Greening, and Sam Gyimah has today been appointed Minister for Higher Education at the Department for Education and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Jo Johnson, who was Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, has moved to Transport.

Sam Gyimah is MP for East Surrey. Former Prisons Minister, he is no stranger to the DfE, having served as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the department between 2015 and 2016. 

IOP welcomes new Higher Education Minister and new Education Secretary

Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, was latterly Employment Minister at the Department for Work and Pensions, and his previous experience includes two years spent on the Education Select Committee.

The IOP looks forward to working with Damian Hinds to further develop and support STEM education at all levels, subject-specific teacher professional development, and the role of subjects like science in driving social mobility. With Sam Gyimah, we will work to ensure that UK HE and research remains both internationally open and internationally leading.
