The IOP welcomes Mr Lamb to this vital oversight role – as the UK negotiates a new relationship with the EU during this parliament – and will work closely with the committee to advance the case for the physics.

IOP chief executive Professor Paul Hardaker said: “Science is central to the UK’s future success, our health and wellbeing and the innovations that affect everyday life – and must be at the heart of our negotiations with the EU. The committee is a powerful voice for ensuring that UK science remains world-class and an integral part of this debate.

“I would also like to thank the outgoing chair, Stephen Metcalfe MP, for his strong leadership and positive work for the scientific community.”

Norman Lamb is the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk. On accepting his election as Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, Norman Lamb said:  “I hope that the committee will hold the government to account on its approach to Brexit, to ensure that the needs of our world-class science and research centres are at its heart.

“It will be an enormous privilege to work with colleagues on the committee, and within the wider science and technology community, to tackle these important issues.”
