Professor Walport is currently the government’s chief scientific adviser and will move to his new role on 1 April 2018, as UKRI takes on its responsibilities.

The IOP’s chief executive, Professor Paul Hardaker, said: “We congratulate Mark and welcome the appointment of someone with his wealth of experience to take on this key role. We look forward to working with him to build and deliver a strategic vision for UK science so as to ensure that it remains world class and delivers on our ambitions to create growth and jobs, and that our community continues to play its part in the global endeavour to address some of our greatest challenges.”
