Female physicists speed network to explore career options

15 December 2017

Promoting career opportunities for female physicists was the focus of an IOP event held on 15 November.

Female physicists speed network to explore career options

Taking Control of your Career as a Female Physicist, an annual event organised in partnership with SEPnet, aims to communicate the range of career opportunities open to female physicists and to provide a platform for attendees to raise questions and concerns in a supportive environment.

A wide variety of panellists from industry and academia shared their experiences and provided tips and advice on their career journeys and the resilience needed to carve out a successful career path.

The speed networking format allowed the attendees to have in-depth conversations with the panellists in small groups, where more specific questions related to their individual needs and current situations were aired.

The attendees commented on what inspirational role models the panellists were, and on how motivated and well informed they felt about their career options.

One PhD student commented: “It’s really hard to meet female physicists not in academia so this is why I attended this event, and I feel inspired and supported. It’s also proven to be a great networking opportunity.”

Speaking afterwards, Rikki Douglas, Sales and Marketing Director of Ultra Electronics, said: “It is refreshing to see so many committed career-minded female physicists in one place.”
