The IOP’s chief executive, Professor Paul Hardaker, said: “It’s hugely sad to lose David for so many reasons. He was a true polymath who brought humanity, humour and thoughtfulness to all that he did. His contributions show the deep understanding he had of the many challenges he worked on and the vision he so often enthusiastically shared.

“He inspired many, myself included, and has a legacy of real change that has helped to shape the agenda in a number of areas, not least his work on sustainable energy and tackling our changing climate. We were lucky to count David amongst our fellows and we will miss him very much.”

Several obituaries of Sir David have been published, including tributes in the Guardian and the Telegraph.
