The IOP enabled several postgraduate students to participate in a summer school held in Mexico in August as part of celebrations for the International Year of Light.

The Light in Science, Light in Life event was aimed particularly at PhD students and postdocs, though not restricted to them. A number of internationally-renowned scientists from several countries gave lectures on topics in optics and photonics. They included IOP honorary fellow Prof. Sir Michael Berry from the University of Bristol and IOP fellow Prof. Kishan Dholakia from the University of St Andrews. There were also three poster sessions in which participants could present their work.

The IOP sponsored Beata Szydlowska from Trinity College Dublin and Francisco Azcue, from the University of Manchester, to attend the summer school. It also gave small grants to help with costs to Nephtalí Gonzalez from the University of Nottingham, Seamus O'Hagan, from the University of Oxford, Bartłomiej Tywoniuk from University College Dublin, and Graeme Weir, from the University of Glasgow.

Following the event, O’Hagan wrote: “I had a really productive time at the summer school; I gained a lot of insights into various fields in optics through the presentations and I also met a lot of young researchers with similar research interests. I have followed up some of the discussions during the poster sessions through email and I am excited to see what comes of these dialogues.”
