Best Practice Award of the IOP goes to Culham Centre for Fusion Energy

22 October 2014

The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) has received the IOP’s Award for Best Practice in Professional Development this year.

Culham Centre

Prof. Steve Cowley, the CCFE’s chief executive officer, accepted the award on behalf of the centre at the Institute’s Awards Dinner on 15 October.

The award is given annually for exemplary behaviour by organisations in the training and development of their physicist employees. To be considered for an award, an employer has to demonstrate that it has a formal career path in place for physicists and show how it encourages professional development of staff, how it recognises the specific skills of its employees and how it promotes a sensible work-life balance. It must also demonstrate that it has taken concrete steps to promote the value of physics in society.

The judges for the 2014 award were particularly impressed with the CCFE’s company-wide mentoring scheme, its commitment to the promotion of physics in society and its flexible or part-time working arrangements.
