Bob Boutland

The Phillips Award is conferred for innovative ideas or activities that have made a major contribution to IOP objectives, a leading role in an IOP group, division or branch, or in the Institute’s Council or its boards or committees, or a significant contribution to the IOP’s external influence.

He was nominated for the award by the IOP’s Physics Communicators Group with the support of the London and South East Branch. He was a founding member of the Physics Communicators Group, served on its committee and was its treasurer from 2009 to 2012.

He has also been an active member of the London and South East Branch of the IOP for many years, editing its newsletter and website, serving on its committee as educational representative and currently being treasurer. He is involved in organising the branch’s programme of events, and regularly organises events for schools, as well as taking Physics In Primary Schools (PIPS) presentations into schools.

His nomination said: “Bob typifies the contributions from IOP members that keep the activities of the Institute running, generously contributing hundreds of hours of energy, enthusiasm and commitment over many years.”
