There is also to be a launch for Wales in Cardiff on 5 February, for Scotland on 23 February in Edinburgh and for Northern Ireland during the first ever NI Science Festival from 19 February to 1 March. In the Republic of Ireland, a number of light-based activities to see in IYOL 2015 will be offered by the IOP in Ireland in an exhibition space at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in Dublin on 8-10 January.

IYOL in the UK now has a national coordinator, Toby Shannon, who was appointed by the IYOL national committee for the UK. Set up in April and chaired by Beth Taylor, the committee now represents more than 40 institutions or individuals who are currently engaged with IYOL.

IYOL in the UK will be sponsoring a prize at the Big Bang Fair in March. The national committee’s plans also include setting up a micro-website for IYOL in the UK, kitemarking a set of teaching resources on the theme of light and looking at providing an education pack for schools, funded through sponsorship.

The IOP is one of the 12 founding partners of the year at international level, and has taken on the leading role in the UK as the coordinating institution. IYOL will be officially launched internationally with an event in Paris on 19-20 January.
