Government places vote of confidence in science facilities

11 February 2014

As Research Councils UK noted the allocations of the science budget for 2015/16 on Monday 10 February, the Institute of Physics (IOP) was delighted to see that the Government has allocated additional funding for the running of our national science facilities and for the subscriptions of international facilities where the UK plays a part.

The additional funding will ensure that the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s core programme of research is not impacted by exchange rate fluctuations and that our world-leading national facilities are used to their optimum potential.

Dr Frances Saunders, President of IOP, said, “This is great news for UK science and innovation and shows that the Government continues to put great store in the potential of research to underpin future growth and prosperity in the UK.”

The domestic facilities that will benefit are ISIS, the Central Laser Facility and Diamond Light Source while, internationally, this allocation strengthens our commitment to CERN, ESO, ESRF and ILL.
