The IOP hosted a special preview screening of The Theory of Everything, the new film about Prof. Stephen Hawking’s first marriage, three weeks before its UK release.

The screening on 8 December was held at Universal Pictures’ own preview theatre at St Giles House in central London, where the 60 guests included a mix of IOP fellows, members and postgraduates.

The idea for the evening came from the Institute and was organised by the IOP’s membership development officer, Andy Stephens. “When we approached Universal Pictures we certainly weren’t expecting them to offer their own private preview cinema in central London for the event,” he said.

“It was a special evening for guests, particularly as it included a question and answer session directly after the screening with Oscar-winning director James Marsh and screenwriter Anthony McCarten, hosted by IOP associate director Philip Diamond.”

The film was released in the US on 7 November and goes on general cinema release in the UK on 1 January 2015. Stephens added: “We are extremely grateful to Universal Pictures, particularly for a film which is gaining significant interest as the film industry heads towards the awards season in the early part of 2015.”
