Talks with the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s new CEO
22 November 2011
On Monday 21 November the Institute of Physics’ (IOP) President Professor Sir Peter Knight and Chief Executive Dr Robert Kirby-Harris met with the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) new Chief Executive Professor John Womersley and the STFC’s Director of Communications Terry O’Connor.
Following the recent appointment of Professor Womersley to the position of Chief Executive at STFC, the meeting was an opportunity to share ideas about cooperation and to discuss potential areas of concern.
Among a range of topics, the discussion included ideas for cooperation in making the case for physics to government before the next national spending review and for the best means to ensure thorough, in-depth consultation of practising scientists on all key issues.
Professor Sir Peter Knight said, “The meeting suggests that we share the same values and concerns. We must work together to continue to demonstrate the economic and social importance of the research supported by STFC, and to ensure that the research community’s views are heard in decisions affecting the future of UK science.”
