Queen’s Birthday Honours for physicists

The Institute of Physics (IOP) congratulates a range of its members and associates for honours received in the Queen’s 2011 birthday list.

IOP Fellow Professor Mark Edward Welland (pictured), Chief Scientific Adviser at the Ministry of Defence, Professor of Nanotechnology and former Editor-in-Chief of IOP Publishing’s Nanotechnology, has been awarded a knighthood, while Fellow Dr Frances Carolyn Saunders, Chief Executive of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at the Ministry of Defence, has become a Commander of the Order of the Bath (CB).

Fellows Jennifer Thomas, Professor of Particle Physics at University College London, Dr Michael Howse, Senior Consultant at Rolls-Royce plc, and Professor Andrew John Wallard, lately Director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres, France, have all received CBEs.

Fellow Dr Peter Batchelor, Head of Electronics and Photonics at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has received an OBE, while IOP Fellow Professor Sheila Rowan, Director at the Institution for Gravitational Research, and Dr Robin Clegg, Head of Science in Society at the Science and Technology Facility Council, have received MBEs.

Dr Robert Kirby-Harris, Chief Executive of IOP, said, "Congratulations to all those honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List - yet more evidence of the crucial contribution physicists make to society.”
