Choosing your teacher training route

It’s important to make an informed decision when choosing the teacher training route that is right for you.

Here are some of the questions you may want to ask before you apply:
• What is the format of the course like?
• How much time will I spend in the classroom?
• Where will I study?
• What type of schools will I teach in?
• Who will be I be learning from, and what is their experience?
• What qualifications will I gain?
• What sort of experience will I have?
• How many other trainee teachers will I be working with?

Both school-led and university-led providers regularly host open days and teacher training taster sessions to give you an insight into their course. Visit our events calendar to find an event near you, or get in touch with the provider directly.

Applications for both routes are made through UCAS. There are two application windows – Apply 1 and Apply 2. In Apply 1, you can select up to three programme choices. We urge applicants to take advantage of the UCAS combined-application system and, if applying for school-led training, to consider applying for the university-led route as well. If you are unsuccessful at Apply 1, you can move to Apply 2 where you make one choice at a time that will be considered by providers sequentially.
