Making an application

Once you have selected a training route and have researched and chosen your preferred ITT provider you are ready to submit an application.

Man applying

The application process opens each October for courses starting in September the following year.  The IOP recommends you apply as early as possible, ideally between September and December because:

  • The application process can be lengthy. You apply for up to four ITT courses and then the course providers see your application sequentially – your second choice only gets to see your application after your first has decided not to accept you and so on
  • This will give you time to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course if required. These often begin in January and if you miss the deadline, you may ‘lose’ a year whilst you complete this course

If it’s getting late in the year, all is not lost. The shortage of physics teachers means that inevitably each year there are places available for latecomers. If you find yourself in a situation where you would like to apply for a course starting soon, we recommend contacting your chosen ITT provider prior to submitting your application. This will enable you to explain your situation and can help to speed up the process.
