Description of the Group Industrial Project activity:
The University of Surrey has a strong tradition of employer engagement. There are strong links with industry and with industrial research collaborators such as the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and AWE.
In the final year at Surrey the BSc student cohort choose a final year project. This project is carried out during the second semester and runs over eleven weeks. The students have access to lab space and equipment, and computational resources depending on the type of project they undertake. The final year project, equivalent to working half time on the project has a well-tested framework of assessment based on a written report on the project, and continuous assessment by the project supervisor.
The Group Industrial Projects will be integrated into the final year projects system, making use of the existing assessment framework. During its first year a couple of group projects will be offered for small groups of 4-5 students.. The group project will be devised together with existing industrial collaborators so that there are several separate components. Each student will be assigned to a different part of the project depending on interests, with a common goal dependent on the success of each component.
The students will have the flexibility to work 1-2 days per week at the company or national lab.
