Brief Description:
The group industry projects (GrIPs) will be open to BSc and MPhys students in their 3rd year. The students will work in groups of 6 by default, but we will retain some flexibility in group construction to reflect the differing needs of the projects. All group sizes will be between 4 and 8 students. The GrIPs will run over 10 weeks in the first semester (Oct – Dec) and the total student workload will be 56.25 hours per student over the course of the project. Each project will be assigned an academic staff member as a “consultant”, to ensure the smooth running of the project, provide management advice and act as quality control. The projects will be assessed by means of a presentation to the clients and staff, as well as a written report.

Key features of this project:
We see the GrIPs as fitting naturally into the progression of our students’ project work over the years 1, 2, 3 and 4. Year 1 and 2 group projects concentrate on key concepts of the core concepts in the core modules. The GrIPs, at the beginning of the 3rd year will build on the students’ experience of group working in the earlier years and will broaden that experience to cover applied problems and industrial management and reporting structures. Second semester 3rd year pair research projects and 4th year research projects, taken by students individually, complete the project progression.
