Student societies

The IOP is proud to be able to support the work of university student physics and astronomy societies throughout the UK and Ireland and welcomes applications from student societies that wish to become officially affiliated.

The IOP will give you a £100 affiliation grant to contribute to your society’s activities, upon completion of the affiliation form.

If you’re running events that promote the excitement of physics and enable participants to gain experience or knowledge related to their studies, or future career aspirations, you can also bid for an additional £500 during this academic year. Applications are accepted from student societies that have affiliated and and are running events that promote the wonder of physics and enable participants to gain experience or knowledge, related to their studies or future career aspirations. For further information contact studentcommunity@iop.org.

Societies can look forward to the following benefits:

  • Attend a range of networking events including trips to CERN, the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, and the annual society’s forum organised by the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Physics Society (UPPS).
  • Attend the annual Conference for Astronomy and Physics Students (CAPS), which is organised by IOP student members. The conference, which will next be held at Northumbria University in the summer of 2018, provides opportunities to: network with your peers at a number of formal and social events; hear talks from leading researchers and physics-based industrialists and to make informed decisions about your future career aspirations.
  • Volunteer in a broad range of outreach and engagement opportunities across the UK and Ireland through your local branch network, which includes Physics in the Field;
  • Compete against your national and international peers in PLANCKS, the annual international physics contest for undergraduate and master’s students.
  • Become an EPS young minds section and receive a €1,000 grant to promote the value of science internationally.
