USN Societies Forum 2017

10 April 2017

This year the USN were pleased to present the National Physics Societies Forum in a new format at the University of Leeds in Yorkshire.

The event aimed to focus on the issues that Physics societies in the UK and Ireland face, encouraging collaboration, networking and better communication across societies. The event also hoped to encourage links to the University Student Network, as a way of linking them to the IOP. Delegates arrived from the universities of:

  • Manchester
  • Strathclyde
  • Oxford
    Sheffield
  • Nottingham
  • Swansea
    Loughborough
  • Leicester
  • Northumbria
  • College Dublin
  • College London
  • Leeds

The event, organised as a collaboration between Leeds PhySoc and the USN, ran very smoothly. Delegates enjoyed the BeCurious festival at Leeds University as well as talks by Alex Brabbs from the IOP and René Oudmaijer from Leeds School of Physics and Astronomy. Furthermore, each university physics society gave a talk on how their society was run in a relaxed and informal environment that encouraged open communication of issues that spanned a wide range of topics.

Congratulations to Swansea University PhySoc who were awarded best physics society 2016/17. The feedback from the event was excellent, and in the future the USN hope that this event will be a regular feature in the calendar, touring the physics universities of the UK. We hope to see everyone at the next event!
