The HEFCE-funded, National STEM Higher Education Programme (NSP) based at the University of Birmingham aims to develop a model for an all-encompassing, sustainable programme of activity for the STEM community, covering the key HE themes of widening participation, employer engagement and the higher level skills agenda. Split into a ‘hub’ (Birmingham) with six, regional ‘spokes’ (Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East, North West, South West, South East and East and Wales), the dissemination of activities and sharing of best practice will take place within the national hub and spokes, allowing activity within the new programme to effectively embed into the sector. The programme also aims to build upon the (higher education project-based) successes of the four HEFCE-funded programmes based at the IOP (Stimulating Physics), RSC (Chemistry for our Future), RAEng (London Engineering Project) and the Mathematical Consortium (More Maths Grads).
