Introduction
The Standing Conference of Physics Professors (SCPP) membership comprises of all the heads of physics departments at UK and Irish universities. The SCPP meets twice a year to discuss policy issues which are considered to be of current importance to university teaching and research.
The Institute of Physics consults the SCPP when responding to consultations relating to teaching and research. In the past, the SCPP has been involved in nominating physicists to sit on the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) benchmarking committees and on Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) physics sub-panels.
The current Chair of the SCPP is Professor John Chapman, University of Glasgow.
Meetings
The meetings are usually attended by 40 heads of departments, and three to four high profile speakers are invited to address the SCPP on key issues of current interest. All heads of physics departments are invited to attend, but they can nominate a representative from their department to attend according to their interest in relation to the topics under consideration at the meeting.
The meetings are usually held at the headquarters of the Institute of Physics at 76 Portland Place, London W1B 1NT.
An attendance fee of £20.00 is payable from each department that sends a representative, which covers the cost of lunch, refreshments and overheads.
The next meeting will be held at the Institute on 23 April 2010. The confirmed speakers at this meeting are:
Professor Gerhard Materlik, Diamond Light Source Ltd
Dr Andrew Bourne, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
Mr Nigel Brown, Nigel Brown Associates
Professor Peter Main, Institute of Physics (IOP)
