Standing Conference of Physics Professors

Introduction

The Standing Conference of Physics Professors (SCPP) membership comprises of all the heads of physics departments at UK and Irish universities. They meet twice a year to discuss policy issues which are considered to be of current importance to their research and teaching.

The Institute of Physics consults the SCPP when responding to government consultations relating to teaching and research. In the past, the SCPP have been involved in nominating physicists to sit on the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) benchmarking committees and on the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) physics panel.

The current Chair of the SCPP is Professor John Chapman, University of Glasgow.

Meetings

The meetings are usually attended by 40 heads of departments, and three to four high profile speakers are invited to address the SCPP on key issues of current interest. All heads of physics departments are invited to attend, but they can nominate a representative from their department to attend according to their interest in relation to the topics under consideration at the meeting.

The meetings are usually held at the headquarters of the Institute of Physics at 76 Portland Place, London W1B 1NT.

A small of fee of £20.00 is normally payable by all attendees, which covers the cost of lunch, refreshments and overheads.

The next meeting will be held at the Institute in April 2009. Information will be made available in due course.
