Ireland Intervarsity Quiz Night 2009

Quiz

The Institute of Physics in Ireland and Nexus arranged the first ever intervarsity quiz night for physics students from across all of Ireland. The quiz took place on Friday 27 February at Trinity Colllege Dublin and eight teams of five students took part, from Queen's University Belfast (QUB), University College Cork (UCC), Dublin City University (DCU), Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University College Dublin (UCD), NUI Galway (NUIG) and NUI Maynooth (NUIM). A number of supporters, including both students and staff, also came along to cheer on their teams. Galway in particular brought a lot of support with them, including their mascot!

The quiz contained both physics and general knowledge questions, including a picture and a music round. Ten rounds of ten questions each, with a few bonus points along the way, totaled just over 100 possible points, and all teams did very well to reach 60-80 points. A tightly fought contest for second place saw NUIG pip QUB by one point into the final head-to-head showdown with the winners of the regular rounds, UC Cork. The two final rounds again went down to a single point, with Cork taking the trophy at the inaugural event.

Winners UCC Left to Right: Diarmuid Good - first year, Donal O Donoghue - fourth year, Kaya Luken - third year, Tim Quinlan - second year, Tara Hennessey - Post grad.

In 2010 the quiz will be hosted at the winning university in Cork. We hope to see many students again next year!

Many thanks to Alison Hackett, IOP Ireland, and Orna Nicholl, Nexus Representative for Ireland, for organising the event, and to Dr John White, UCD, for performing splendidly in the role of quiz master.

Some more pictures of the event are available in MyIOP. The original quiz questions will be made available on the IOP Ireland website.
