The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is a student exchange programme with over 80 member countries worldwide. It provides degree-level students of science, engineering, technology and the applied arts with paid, course-related technical training abroad. Placements are in the summer-time and are typically 6-12 weeks long with a few year-long placements available. Destinations vary from Iceland to Argentina, China, Canada and Kazakhstan, to name a few.
In the UK the British Council administers this programme, funded by the UK Education Departments. IAESTE Ireland is managed by Léargas The Exchange Bureau and is supported by the Department of Education and Science.
The programme delivers technical experience, skills development and intercultural understanding, and helps to create a workforce capable of sustaining economic competitiveness in the global economy. Work experience gained abroad enhances your independence and flexibility, communication and foreign language skills. Employers know that if students have successfully overcome the challenges brought on by international work experience, they will stand out from the crowd at interview.
Since it was founded at Imperial College London in 1948, IAESTE has exchanged more than 330,000 students, often as the first step in their international careers.
Placements are for undergraduate students in the second to final year of study (penultimate and final year students in Ireland).
The deadline for registrations of interest for placements for next summer is 10 December 2009. Students can register online at www.iaeste.org.uk or www.iaeste.ie.
